Platyhelminthes (Flatworms)
Female Reproductive System
- The female reproductive system consists of two ovaries located in the anterior part of the body.
- The ovaries are connected to two oviducts, which lead to many vitellaria (yolk glands).
- The genital pore, located behind the mouth, opens into a genital vacuole that contains a seminal receptacle, which stores sperm from another worm during copulation.
Hungering and Regeneration in Planaria
- Planaria can regenerate lost body parts when hungry, absorbing its own inner organs, including:
- Fertilization organs (oviparous)
- Yolk glands (Vitellaria)
- Other reproductive organs
- Intestine and muscles
- When food becomes available, the worm regenerates lost organs through the presence of neoblasts (adult stem cells, also known as interstitial or archaeocytes).
- In nine months, a Planaria can lose up to two-thirds of its body size, but can then regenerate lost organs when food becomes available.
