Study Notes
Five Kingdom Classification System
- The classification system consists of five kingdoms: Monera, Protista, Fungia, Plantae, and Animalia.
Kingdom Protista
- The kingdom Protista includes eukaryotic organisms that do not fit into any of the other four kingdoms.
- Protists can be classified into three categories based on their mode of nutrition:
- Animal-like protists that consume other organisms.
- Plant-like protists that produce their own food through photosynthesis.
- Fungus-like protists that obtain food by external digestion, either as decomposers or parasites.
Sponges
- The body of a sponge is a collection of a few different types of cells loosely arranged in a gelatinous matrix called a mesohyl.
- The mesohyl is the connective tissue of a sponge body and is supported by skeletal elements.
- The skeletal elements of sponges are variable and important in taxonomy.
Canal Systems in Sponges
- There are three main types of canal systems in sponges: Asconoid, Syconoid, and Leuconoid.
- Asconoid sponges have canals that run straight through the sponge body.
- Syconoid sponges have canals that are branched and do not allow water to flow straight through to the spongocoel.
- Leuconoid sponges have a more complicated canal system with longer and more branched canals.
