Biological Molecules

Carbohydrates

Proteins

Proteins are made up of amino acids, which are joined together by peptide bonds. The sequence of amino acids determines the specific protein's structure and function. Some proteins act as enzymes, catalyzing crucial biological processes, while others serve as structural components of cells, such as the proteins found in bones and muscles.

Nucleic Acids

Nucleic acids are responsible for storing genetic information. They consist of nucleotides, which are made up of a sugar molecule, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base. There are two types of nucleic acids: deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA). DNA is present in the cell's nucleus and is maintained throughout an organism's life, while RNA is involved in the process of protein synthesis.

Functions of Biological Molecules

1. Energy storage: Carbohydrates, such as glycogen, provide cells with a readily available energy source that can be quickly converted into glucose for immediate use.
2. Protein synthesis: Proteins play a crucial role in various biological processes, including the synthesis of other biomolecules, cell signaling, and maintaining cell structure.
3. Genetic information: Nucleic acids, particularly DNA, store and transmit genetic information from one generation to the next through a process known as replication.
