Species Diversity
Species diversity is defined by the variety of distinct living things that can be identified within a specific location. This may range from small numbers of very different species—such as just a few mammalian species, bird species, reptile species, etc., up to large numbers of very similar ones. For instance, it might consist solely of one vast forest containing trees with only slight differences between them all over the whole continent, or more species might exist within smaller areas, like one region where there are many kinds of lizards.
Genetic Diversity
Genetic diversity describes how much variation exists among individuals belonging to the same biological population or taxonomic unit. When speaking definitively about what constitutes high levels of genetic diversity compared to low levels, scientists usually look at the average amount of variance per gene locus across many individual members of a population. A high level of genetic variation indicates a stable environment because many genes carry traits necessary for survival under various conditions; any single mutant gene will likely have little impact since so many others share its function.
