The Three Modes of Material Nature

  • The material nature works in three modes: goodness, passion, and ignorance.

Mode of Ignorance

  • Characterized by a hopeless life, neither passionate nor good.
  • Lives in the deepest darkness of life.

Mode of Passion

  • Materialistic, seeking false enjoyment of material existence.
  • Influenced by the mode of passion, one wants to squeeze out the energy of the body to enjoy material life.
  • Does not know the truth.

Mode of Goodness

  • Situated in this mode, we can understand what I am, what this world is, what God is, and what our interrelationship is.
  • By hearing Krsna katha, we will be freed from the stages of ignorance and passion and situated in the mode of goodness.
  • Gains real knowledge of what we are.

Analogy of the Hog

  • The hog represents the animal existence, which is full of suffering but unaware of it.
  • The hog's life is miserable, living in filth, eating stools, and being obsessed with sex, yet it is happy in its ignorance.
  • This represents the spirit of enjoyment, but in a sensual and unfulfilling way.
