Geography is the world of physical places and human culture. It's where people live, work, study, travel, and play. In the broadest sense, geography can refer to any information or study concerning the Earth, its regions, and its inhabitants. However, when we use the term specifically, it often refers to physical features such as mountains, rivers, deserts, forests, and climate, along with political and cultural information.

Physical Geography

Physical geography focuses on the natural features of Earth, including the atmosphere, biosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere. Some of the key components of physical geography include:

Atmosphere

The atmosphere is the gaseous envelope surrounding the planet Earth that is retained by Earth's gravity. It protects life on earth by absorbing most of the Sun's ultraviolet radiation and helping to regulate temperature and climate.

Biosphere

The biosphere comprises all living things and the places where they exist. It ranges from the top of the highest mountains to the deepest ocean trenches.

Lithosphere

The lithosphere is the outermost layer of Earth, including the crust and upper mantle. It is divided into several tectonic plates, which float on the underlying asthenosphere.

Hydrosphere

The hydrosphere is the component of the Earth system composed of all water found on, above and below its surface at any given moment. About 71% of Earth's surface is covered in water.

Human Geography

Human geography studies the human aspects of Earth. This field looks at how humans interact with each other and the environment. Some of the major topics within human geography include:

Population

Geographers study patterns of human migration and settlement.

Political Geography

Political geography is concerned with the spatial aspect of state, territory, location of borders, climate impact on politics, and more.
