Reserve Deputy Classifications

Probationary Reserve Deputy (1 year):
- May not have completed all policy-mandated training.
- Supervised by Reserve Deputy I/II, field training officer, or reserve supervisor.

Reserve Deputy I: Completed probationary period and training.

Support Deputy: Appointed by the Sheriff to serve in the Sheriff's Support Unit.
- Can be classified as Reserve Deputy I/II.
- Not subject to a probationary period.
- Waivers/Modifications: The Sheriff or designee can modify or waive initial training requirements and classify reserve deputies.
Chain of Command
- The reserve chain aligns with the Sheriff's Office structure.
- Communication/directives go through the reserve chain, reviewed by the Assistant Chief Deputy of Law Enforcement.
- Reporting Structure: Deputies report through various ranks to the Reserve Commander, then Deputy Chief.
Organizational Structure

General Standards
- Training: Newly appointed reserve deputies must complete agency orientation (within one month). Reserve deputies must complete Field Training Program (TCOLE) within a year of appointment. -Reserve deputies appointed before January 1, 2018, can elect to complete the training program if they wish.
- Training Based on Previous Experience: The Sheriff or designee can modify or waive training requirements based on past experience and/or exceptional qualifications.
- Work Requirements: A minimum of sixteen (16)hours monthly is required, including designated meetings and training. Support deputies require at least 8 hours each quarter.
Promotions and Demotions
- Promotions and demotions are at the discretion of the Sheriff or designee;
- Promotion procedures outlined by rank, requiring 6 months of service, good standing and letter of interest/resume. Potential waivers exists.
Reserve Deputy Off-Duty Employment
- Restrictions: Prohibited from pay security events.
- Permitted Work: Can work off-duty traffic assignments, but only with approved BCSO off-duty employment permit.
- Process: Reserve deputy submits electronic permit request routed through chain of command for approval, or denial.
- Probationary Periods: Probationary deputies may only engage in off-duty traffic assignment permits at county facilities under supervision.

Conditions and Expiration:
- Calendar year expiration;
- Change in the reserves outside employment;
- Change in the reserve deputy's BCSO status, or employment;
- Information changed making previously approved permit incorrect.
Reserve Emergency Callouts
- Sheriff or designee can initiate emergency callouts.
- Callouts will follow the Sheriff's Reserve SOP.
