Sam Altman's Career and Projects

Samuel Altman was born on April 22, 1985 in St. Louis, Missouri.

He attended John Burroughs School for high school and studied computer science at Stanford University until dropping out in 2005.

In 2005, at age 19, Altman co-founded and became CEO of Loopt, a location-based social networking mobile application.

After raising more than $30M in venture capital, Loopt was shut down in 2012 after failing to get traction.

In February 2014, Altman was named president of Y Combinator by its cofounder Paul Graham.

His first batch of investments included Loopt.

In September 2016, Altman announced that he would become president of YC Group, which included Y Combinator and other units.

In October 2015, Altman announced YC Continuity, a $700 million growth-stage equity fund that invests in YC companies.

In March 2019, YC announced Altman's transitioning into a Chairman position to focus more on OpenAI.

In 2020, he is co-founder and CEO of Worldcoin.

Altman is the co-founder and CEO of Loopt, a social networking app.

Loopt was acquired by the social networking company Grindr in March of 2018.

Since the acquisition, Altman has been focusing on new projects, including Worldcoin, a digital currency that he hopes will be given to every human on Earth for free.

In 2019, Altman raised money for Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang.

Altman is also involved in philanthropy, working on Project Covalence to help researchers quickly launch clinical trials in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Altman is a vegetarian and has been dating his Loopt co-founder Nick Sivo for 9 years.
