Battle of Savo Island, 1942
- The Imperial Japanese Navy attacked Allied ships screening the Allied landing force in the eastern Solomon Islands during the night.
- The Japanese task force, including seven cruisers and one destroyer, sailed from Rabaul, New Britain, and Kavieng, New Ireland.
