Study Notes
Basic Subtraction
- Subtraction is the arithmetic operation that represents the difference between two numbers.
- It is the inverse operation of addition.
- The minuend is the number from which another number (the subtrahend) is subtracted.
- The subtrahend is the number that is subtracted from the minuend.
- The difference is the result of the subtraction operation.
- Example: 10 - 5 = 5 (10 is the minuend, 5 is the subtrahend, and 5 is the difference.)
Properties of Subtraction
- Subtraction is not commutative: a - b ≠ b - a
- Subtraction is not associative: (a - b) - c ≠ a - (b - c).
- Subtraction has no identity element.
- Subtraction is unique: There is only one difference for a given pair of numbers.
- Subtraction is related to addition. Subtracting a number is the same as adding its opposite. (e.g., 5 - 3 = 2 and 5 + (-3) = 2).
Mental Math Techniques
- Breaking down numbers: Breaking down a larger number into easier to subtract smaller parts, then adding the results. This is useful for subtracting numbers of more than one digit.
- Using complements: Finding the difference between a number and the next ten, hundred, etc. and then adjusting that difference through other operations.
- Adding to make a difference equal to the required difference. Use addition or subtraction to adjust or alter the given number.
- Front-end subtraction: Focus on the largest place values first, then adjust as needed to determine an approximate difference.
- Rounding: Estimating subtractions by rounding numbers or values to simpler, smaller values.
Word Problems
- Word problems present subtraction situations in real-world scenarios.
- To solve a word problem:
- Read the problem carefully and identify the key information.
- Determine what the question is asking.
- Choose the appropriate operation—subtraction or other method.
- Solve the problem using correct steps.
- Check the answers to ensure they make sense in the context of the problem.
- Examples:
- "John had 15 apples. He gave away 7 apples. How many apples does John have left?"
- "A store had 200 shirts. 125 were sold. How many shirts are left in the store?"
- "Mary read 30 pages of a book. If the book has 100 pages in total, how many more pages does she need to read?"
Number Line
- A number line is a visual representation of numbers.
- It helps to visualize subtraction as moving along the number line from one number to another.
- To subtract using a number line:
- Start at the minuend on the number line.
- Move to the left by the amount of the subtrahend.
- The final position on the number line is the difference.
500 - 445
- To solve the subtraction problem 500 - 445:
- Line up the numbers vertically, aligning place values (hundreds, tens, ones).
- Subtract the ones column (0 - 5): Borrow from the tens column. 10 - 5 = 5
- Subtract the tens column (9 - 4 = 5)
- Subtract the hundreds column (4 - 4 = 0).
- The answer is 55.
