Chemical Reactions and Equations
- A complete chemical equation represents the reactants, products, and their physical states symbolically.
- A chemical equation must be balanced to ensure the same number of atoms of each type on both the reactant and product sides.
Types of Chemical Reactions
- Combination Reaction: Two or more substances combine to form a new single substance.
- Decomposition Reaction: A single substance decomposes to give two or more substances.
- Displacement Reaction: An element displaces another element from its compound.
- Double Displacement Reaction: Two different atoms or groups of atoms (ions) are exchanged.
- Precipitation Reaction: Produces insoluble salts.
Oxidation and Reduction
- Oxidation: Gain of oxygen or loss of hydrogen by substances.
- Reduction: Loss of oxygen or gain of hydrogen by substances.
Exothermic and Endothermic Reactions
- Exothermic Reaction: Reactions where heat is given out along with the products.
- Endothermic Reaction: Reactions where energy is absorbed.
Examples of Chemical Reactions
- Calcium hydroxide + Carbon dioxide → Calcium carbonate + Water
- Zinc + Silver nitrate → Zinc nitrate + Silver
- Aluminium + Copper chloride → Aluminium chloride + Copper
- Barium chloride + Potassium sulphate → Barium sulphate + Potassium chloride
