Study Notes

Scoring System

  • Since January 2006, the badminton scoring system is based on rally points; points are scored on every rally.
  • Matches consist of the best of 3 games, where each game is played to 21 points.
  • A player or team must achieve a 2-point advantage to win at 20-all; if reaching 29-all, the player or team scoring the 30th point wins.
  • The winner of a game serves first in the subsequent game.

Intervals and Change of Ends

  • Players receive a 60-second interval when the leading score hits 11 points.
  • A 2-minute break is allowed between games.
  • In the third game, players switch ends at 11 points.

Singles Rules

  • At the beginning of the game and with an even score, the server serves from the right service court; the left service court is used for odd scores.
  • Winning a rally allows the server to score a point and continue serving from the alternate court.
  • If the receiver wins a rally, they earn a point and become the new server.

Doubles Rules

  • Doubles matches feature a single serve per rally.
  • The serving player serves from the right court at even scores and from the left at odd scores.
  • If the serving side wins a rally, they score a point and serve again from the alternate court.
  • Winning by the receiving side results in that side scoring a point and becoming the new serving side.
  • The player from the receiving side who served last continues in the same service court; their partner follows a reverse pattern.
  • Players retain their respective service courts until they score a point while serving.
  • Service court errors are corrected when discovered.

Safety and Etiquette

  • Maintain a firm grip on the racket to prevent it from slipping.
  • Avoid swinging the racket near your partner to prevent accidental injury.
  • Stay within your own court to reduce the risk of collision.
  • Halt play if others inadvertently enter your court during a rally.
  • Only retrieve a shuttlecock from another court when the action has stopped.
  • Be cautious of surroundings, including walls and net posts.
  • Agree on court boundaries and the first server before the game starts.
  • Players are responsible for calling their own lines; if unsure, replay the point.
