Flashcards
Full Backup
Full Backup
A backup that copies all files, even those unchanged since the last backup. It takes longer than incremental backups, but is faster to restore.
Incremental Backup
Incremental Backup
A backup that only copies files changed since the last full or incremental backup. It's faster than a full backup, but restoring requires restoring the full backup and all incremental backups in chronological order.
Differential Backup
Differential Backup
A backup that copies all files changed since the last full backup. It's faster than a full backup, but slower than incremental backups, and restoration only needs the last full backup and the most recent differential backup.

Study Notes
Backup and Restore Types
-
File backups: Back up specific files/folders to a compressed file. Excludes system files, programs, encrypted files, Recycle Bin, user profiles, and temporary files. Stored in a file with the same name as the computer at the root of the backup destination.
-
System image backups: Back up the entire volume (OS, programs, drivers, user data). Stored as a .vhdx file. Only one system image can be saved; the old image is replaced. Saved in the WindowsImageBackup folder, which contains a Catalog folder (with GlobalCatalog and BackupGlobalCatalog files) and a Backup folder with the date and time.
Backup Considerations
-
Backup frequency: Back up user data more often than system data. Back up system data and applications before system changes.
-
Testing: Critically important to test restore methods. A backup is useless if you can't restore it.
-
Backup storage: Store backup media offsite to prevent simultaneous disaster affecting backups. Can use offsite network storage or cloud services.
-
Scheduling: Use the backup utility or Task Scheduler to schedule backups. Only one backup job can be scheduled using Backup and Restore.
File History
-
Functionality: Doesn't back up the entire system. Primarily backs up user profile data (files, preferences, account details, libraries) as a shadow copy, with hourly snapshots and versions tracked.
-
Enabling: Disabled by default.
-
Configure location: Choose storage location on a separate drive from the user profile location, as a best practice.
-
Disable before disconnect: If using an external drive, disable File History before disconnecting.
Windows Backup and Restore (Windows 7)
-
Functionality: Supports both file and system image backups. Allows restoring Windows 7 backups to Windows 10/11 systems.
-
Backup media: Can save backups to secondary internal drives, external drives, optical drives, USB flash drives, and network shares.
-
System image specifics: Bootable if the system crashes; can't restore system image without a Windows boot system.
-
Data types: Backs up system state data (OS files, registry, drivers, configs), user data (modified user files), and application data (application files/configs). Some system state backups might include application files.
Backup Media Restrictions
- Cannot back up to: The same disk or a disk containing the OS, or a tape drive.
System Image Creation
- Steps: Select "Create a system image," choose the location then follow backup instructions.
Windows File Recovery
-
Functionality: Command-line application to recover deleted files.
-
Modes: Default mode (for recently deleted files), Segment mode for older deletions, format failures etc., and Signature mode for FAT file systems.
