Availability Zones

• An Availability Zone (AZ) is a isolated location within a region that has its own independent power, cooling, and networking.
• Each AZ is connected to other AZs in the region through low-latency, high-throughput networking.
• AZs are designed to provide high availability and redundancy, ensuring that resources are available even in the event of an outage.

Edge Locations

• Edge locations are caching locations that are used to distribute content to end-users with low latency.
• They are typically located in major cities and are used to cache frequently accessed content, such as videos and images.
• Edge locations are part of the Amazon CloudFront content delivery network (CDN).

Region Selection

• When selecting a region, consider factors such as:
  • Proximity to users: Choose a region that is close to your target audience to reduce latency.
  • Compliance: Ensure that the region meets relevant regulatory and compliance requirements.
  • Availability: Choose a region that has multiple AZs to ensure high availability.
  • Cost: Consider the cost of resources in different regions.

Latency-Based Routing

• Latency-based routing is a feature of Amazon Route 53 that directs traffic to the AWS region that provides the lowest latency.
• It uses DNS queries to determine the latency between users and AWS regions, and then directs traffic to the region with the lowest latency.
• This feature is useful for applications that require low latency and high performance.

Content Delivery Network (CDN)

• A CDN is a network of distributed servers that deliver content to users from locations close to them.
• AWS offers a CDN service called Amazon CloudFront, which integrates with other AWS services such as S3 and EC2.
