Study Notes
Reporting Runway Visual Range (RVR)
- RVR must be reported for both runway ends if multiple runways are available. For instance, R24/0800 R30/1200 for cross-runways.
- RVR is reported in specific increments:
- 25 m for RVR less than 400 m.
- 50 m for RVR between 400 m and 800 m.
- 100 m for RVR above 800 m.
- Rounding down to the nearest reporting step is required for any value outside the standard increments.
RVR Limits
- Minimum detectable RVR is 50 m; maximum is 2000 m.
- Reports indicate if RVR is less than 50 m or more than 2000 m if outside these limits.
- If RVR exceeds 2000 m but horizontal visibility is below this limit, use "ABV" in local routine/special reports and "P" in METAR/SPECI.
Reporting Below Minimum RVR
- Use "BLW" in local routine/special for RVR below detectable values and "M" in METAR/SPECI, followed by the value.
Averaging RVR Values
- A 10-minute period is used to monitor RVR trends, checking if the mean differs by 100 m over two 5-minute intervals.
- For METAR and SPECI, a mean is calculated over a 10-minute period; only data after any significant RVR changes are included.
Observation and Reporting Procedures
- RVR should be formatted as “(Element) (Runway) (Section) (RVR Value)”.
- Only the TDZ value is reported in METAR/SPECI without location, e.g., R24/1100.
- If RVR is observed from multiple locations (TDZ, MID, END):
- Always report TDZ first in METAR/SPECI without location indication.
- In local routine reports, include values for TDZ, MID, and END, e.g., "RVR RWY 17 TDZ 600M MID 500M END 400M."
Technology and Equipment
- An automated Transmissometer system assesses RVR with assemblies near the TDZ, midpoint, and stop end.
- RVR data is displayed and reported when visibility is ≤ 2000 m.
- Stations must maintain operational capability of RVR systems even when visibility exceeds 2000 m, guided by local conditions.
Display and Record Keeping
- RVR data for the TDZ should be appended in METAR on Mausam Online when visibility is ≤ 2000 m.
- Specific RVR measuring increments must be adhered to for accurate reporting.
