The autoclave is an essential device in various industries, particularly in healthcare and laboratories, where it plays a crucial role in ensuring sterility. Working and Application of Autoclave
The autoclave works by using steam under pressure to sterilize the materials inside the chamber. The high pressure increases the boiling point of water, allowing the attainment of higher temperatures for sterilization. Typically, water boils at 100°C under normal atmospheric pressure, but when the pressure is increased, the boiling point also rises. The high pressure facilitates rapid heat penetration into deeper parts of the material and causes irreversible loss of function and activity of microbes due to the coagulation of proteins and inactivation of cells.
In an autoclave, steam boils at 121°C at a pressure of 15 psi (775 mm of Hg). When this steam comes in contact with the surface, it kills microbes by giving off latent heat, and the condensed liquid ensures the moist killing of the microbes.
