    Study Notes

    AutoCAD Basics

    • Launch AutoCAD software
    • Select the right template needed for the drawing, especially based on the units of the dimensions
    • In the model view, type Z in the command line and select all
    • Create layers using the layer manager
    • Define the default layer
    • Combine both draw and modify tools to create the drawing
    • Create a dimension style and use that to place dimensions on the drawing

    Creating a New Drawing

    • Click on the Start Page and click on NEW
    • The Select box Template dialog box will pop up (fig. 13)
    • Select the acadiso.dwt from the list of Templates
    • A new drawing workspace will open
    • Set the boundary using the Rectangle Tool
    • Set the Viewport by typing MV or MVIEW in the command palette and press ENTER
    • Activate a viewport by double-clicking inside the viewport

    Setting Up the Page

    • Set the layers (Line types)
    • Set the Text Styles
    • Set the Dimension, leader, and Table styles if necessary
    • Go to File and Save as template by clicking on SAVE AS
    • Select dwt template as your file type
    • Click on Page Setup Manager (Fig. 14)
    • Add the name of the Template and save the file to a suitable location

    Engineering Drawing

    • Cylindrical compression springs: coils are drawn only at each end of the spring and are connected by parallel thin lines
    • Spur gears: the front view consists of the outside thick circle and the pitch center-line circle
    • Bearings: conventional representation does not imply any particular type of bearing

    Conventional Representation of Common Features

    • Thread (Internal and external)
    • Splined shaft
    • Knurl
    • Shaft
    • Serrated shaft
    • Holes on circular pitch
    • Bearing

    Exercises

    • Produce the Front, left, and Right End View of the images

    Sectional Views

    • Introduction to sectional views
    • Full Sections
    • Placement of Section view
    • Labeling Cutting planes
    • Half Sections
    • Broken out sections
    • Revolved sections
    • Removed sections
    • Offset sections
    • Ribs in section
    • Aligned sections
    • Partial sections
    • Parts not sectioned

    Assembly Drawings

    • Definition: a drawing showing how all of the parts fit together
    • Types of assembly drawings: Layout, General assembly, Working-drawing, Erection assembly, Subassembly, Pictorial assembly
    • Assembly drawings can contain: one or more views, auxiliary views, sections, enlarged views, parts list or bill of materials

    Development of Solids/Surfaces

    • Surface terminology: plane, ruled surface, single-curved surface, double-curved surface, warped surface
    • Examples of ruled surfaces: plane, cylinder, cone
    • Examples of warped surfaces: Figure 57
