Study Notes
Introduction
- New and improved dimensioning tools in AutoCAD accelerate dimensioning
- Uses a single "DIM" command to automatically recognize different types of dimensions
- Features include associative centerlines and center marks that automatically adjust as you make changes to your drawings
- Automatically places dimensions on the proper layer
Types of Dimensions
- Linear
- Radial (radius, diameter, jogged)
- Angular
- Ordinate
- Arc length
The Old Way of Dimensioning
- Previous versions of AutoCAD required multiple commands for each dimension type:
- DIMLINEAR
- DIMALIGNED
- DIMANGULAR
- DIMARC
- DIMRADIUS
- DIMDIAMETER
- DIMJOGGED
- DIMORDINATE
Dimensioning the New Way in AutoCAD
- Uses the "DIM" command to automatically recognize objects and default to appropriate dimension types.
- Eliminates repetitive steps and increases productivity.
- Dimensions appear on the appropriate layer by default.
Elements of a Dimension
- Dimension text
- Dimension line
- Arrowheads
- Extension lines
- Center mark/centerline
Extension Lines
- Extension lines are a special part of a dimension object, which are ignored by OSNAP by default.
- They are controlled in the Options menu.
The New DIM Tool
- Found on the Home and Annotate ribbons in AutoCAD.
The Old Dim Tools
- They are still available but should not be used, as they are not automatic and do not place dimensions on the DIMLAYER layer.
Defpoints
- Defpoints layer is created when you add an associative dimension.
- Stores invisible dimension nodes that do not print.
- Cannot remove this layer.
Creating Dimensions
- The "DIM" command can create nearly any type of dimension:
- Linear
- Angular
- Radial
- Arc length
- Ordinate
- Remains active and continues to create dimensions until stopped.
Creating Linear Horizontal, Vertical, and Aligned Dimensions
- By default, linear dimensions align with the object.
- Press SHIFT to force the dimension to be horizontal or vertical.
- Select extension line origins to dimension across multiple objects.
Creating Linear Baseline Dimensions
- Begins from the same extension line origin as an existing dimension.
- Select the Baseline option, followed by the baseline origin and adjust the offset as needed.
- Takes on the dimension style and layer of the extension line you select by default (controlled by DIMCONTINUEMODE).
Creating Linear Continued Dimensions
- Starts from the extension line of an existing dimension.
- Select the Continue option, followed by the extension line.
- Takes on the dimension style and layer of the extension line you select by default (controlled by DIMCONTINUEMODE).
Creating Angular Dimensions
- Measures the angle between two non-parallel lines, the angle subtended by an arc, or the angle formed by three selected points.
- Three ways to create:
- Pick an arc
- Pick 2 lines
- Pick 3 points
Creating Angular Baseline Dimensions
- Identical to linear baseline, but the baseline selected is an angular dimension.
Creating Angular Continued Dimensions
- Identical to linear continued, but the baseline selected is an angular dimension.
Creating Radial Dimensions
- Measures the radii or diameter of arcs and circles with optional centerline or center mark.
- Symbol ( or R) and center mark are defined as part of the dimension style.
Creating Arc Length Dimensions
- Measures distance along an arc or polyline arc.
- Hat/cap symbol () is defined as part of the dimension style.
Creating Jogged Radius Dimensions
- Measures the radius of an arc when the center cannot be shown at its true location.
- Select the Jogged option, the arc, center location, dimension line location, and jog location.
Creating Ordinate Dimensions
- Measures perpendicular distance (X or Y value) from an origin (datum) point to a specific point on the object.
- Choose the ordinate option, origin point, object, and select X or Y orientation.
Dimensioning the New and Improved AutoCad Way
- AutoCAD's new dimensioning tools streamline the process, reducing steps and making it more efficient.
- The DIM command automatically determines the type of dimension you need based on object selection, eliminating the need for numerous commands.
- Dimensions appear on the relevant layer.
- Old dimensioning commands (DIMLINEAR, DIMALIGNED, DIMANGULAR, etc.) are still available, but the automatic DIM command is preferred for improved efficiency and automation.
- Defpoints layer is created when you add an associative dimension, holding invisible dimension nodes. Defpoints do not print.
- The DIM command can create various dimension types: linear, angular, radial, arc length, and ordinate.
- For linear dimensions:
- Press SHIFT to force horizontal or vertical dimensions.
- Select extension line origins to dimension across multiple objects.
- Baseline dimension starts from the same extension line origin as an existing dimension.
- Continued dimension starts from the extension line of an existing dimension.
- Angular dimension measures the angle between lines, arcs, or three selected points.
- Radial dimension measures radii or diameters of arcs and circles.
- Arc length dimension measures distance along an arc or polyline arc.
- Jogged radius dimension measures radius when the center cannot be shown at its true location.
- Ordinate dimension measures perpendicular distance from an origin point to a feature.
- Center marks are created using the CENTERMARK command, added at the center of arcs, circles, and associated with their object.
- Centerlines are created using the CENTERLINE command, used as reference to axes of symmetry, and associated with their objects.
- Dimension text is created automatically, can include prefix/suffix, and can be formatted.
- The Mtext option and Text option allow editing and changing the dimension text.
