Early Life and Education
- Augurio M. Abeto was born on January 21, 1903, in Binalbagan, Negros Occidental.
- His parents were Severo Abeto and Albina Maranon.
- He showed intellectual gifts early, graduating valedictorian in the primary and intermediate levels at the Binalbagan public school.
- He also graduated valedictorian in high school at the Jaro Seminary in Iloilo.
Career
- Abeto received his Bachelor of Laws at the University of Sto. Tomas and became a member of the Philippine Bar in 1933.
- He was appointed as assistant fiscal of Negros Occidental, holding the position from 1933-1938.
- He was elected mayor of Binalbagan in 1939 and served until 1947.
World War II
- During the war, Abeto set up a Resistance Force Government in the mountains of Binalbagan, which lasted for three years during the Japanese Occupation.
- The government consisted of evacuees of Binalbagan and the guerillas of that region.
- At this historic spot, he named "Verobina" in honor of his parents, and conceived and set to music the lyric poems collectively known as "Dalawidaw".
Political Career
- In 1949, Abeto was elected congressman of the third district of Negros Occidental, serving for one term.
- During his term, he co-authored several bills, including the Sugar Crop Sharing Law, the Workmen's Compensation Law, and the Magna Carta of Labor.
- He was responsible for the creation of the town of Magallon (now Moises Padilla) and the establishment of the National College of Fisheries in Isla Serena, Binalbagan.
Later Life and Legacy
- Abeto died on January 27, 1977, at the age of 74.
- He left a lasting legacy as a poet, lawyer, and public servant, known for his intellectual gifts and contributions to the country.
