Auctioneer Licensing Requirements

Applicants who have completed auctioneering school more than five years prior to applying must provide documentation of their lawful participation in auctions within the previous two years.
- Auctioneering is defined as per G.S. 85B-1(8)

Apprentices seeking an auctioneer license need to submit a log of their apprenticeship experience.
- The log should include the hours and dates of their experience.
- Each log entry must be verified and signed by their supervising auctioneer.
- At least 100 hours of experience are required throughout the two-year apprenticeship period.
- Bid calling requires at least 25 hours of experience.
- Working as a ring person, drafting and negotiating contracts, evaluating merchandise, advertising, clerking, and cashiering require at least 50 hours combined, with at least five hours of accumulated experience documented for each activity.
- Apprentices must submit their application and supporting documentation, and pass the auctioneer exam before their apprentice auctioneer license expires.
Non-Resident Reciprocal Auctioneer Licensing Requirements
- Applicants for a non-resident auctioneer license must submit the following documentation:
- A completed application form prescribed by the Board
- A forward-facing, 2" x 2" color photograph of the applicant
- Completed fingerprint cards provided by a law enforcement agency, along with a signed form consenting to criminal history checks and fingerprint/identifying information use
- A copy of the applicant's high school diploma or proof of equivalency
- An employee classification form provided by the Board
- Applicable fees as stated in 21 NCAC 04B.0202
- A statement of good standing from the licensing board or commission of each jurisdiction where the applicant holds an auctioneer, apprentice auctioneer, or auction firm license
- Irrevocable consent of the applicant that service to the Board shall be sufficient service of process for actions against the applicant by a resident of North Carolina arising out of their auctioneering activities, with notarized signature and notarial seal affixed.

- Applicants for an apprentice auctioneer license must submit the following documentation:
- A completed application form prescribed by the Board

- Completed fingerprint cards provided by a law enforcement agency, along with a signed form consenting to criminal history checks and fingerprint/identifying information use

The application form for an auctioneer license requires the following information:
- Applicant's legal name
- Applicant's physical, postal mail, and email addresses
- Applicant's telephone number(s)
- County, state, and country of the applicant's legal residence
- Applicant's social security number
- Applicant's date of birth
- Applicant's qualification for licensure as set forth in G.S. 85B-4(b)
- Applicant's places of residence within the previous five years
- Applicant's current employment (if any)
- Applicant's places of employment within the previous five years
- Two character endorsements for the applicant
- Any doing business names for the applicant
