Attenuation and Crosstalk
- Attenuation is a hindrance to signal flow due to conductive resistance, a characteristic of electrical cables carrying more than one signal.
- Mutual capacitance occurs when multiple signals occur in a cable.
- Impedance is a combination of resistance, capacitance, and inductance.
- Minute changes (in diameter, insulation, etc.) in a conductor cause imbalances, termed "unbalanced."
- Cross-talk is unwanted signal (noise) from one conductor to another. Near-end cross-talk is measured at the test point; far-end, opposite.
- Alien cross-talk occurs between distinct cables in a bundle.
- Power sum cross-talk is combined NEXT and FEXT values, essential in multi-wire cable support.
- Attenuation and cross-talk must be considered in network setups, even at minimum levels. Noise is distinct from cross-talk.
