    Study Notes

    The Troposphere

    • The lowest part of the atmosphere, where we live, containing most of the weather (clouds, rain, snow)
    • Temperature decreases with altitude, approximately 6.5°C per kilometre
    • Contains about 75% of the atmosphere's air and almost all of the water vapour
    • The boundary layer is the lowest part, where air motion is influenced by the Earth's surface
    • Turbulence in the boundary layer redistributes heat, moisture, pollutants, and atmospheric constituents

    The Tropopause

    • The top of the troposphere, varying in height from 0-10 km at the poles to 17-18 km near the equator

    The Stratosphere

    • Extends from the tropopause to about 50 km above the Earth's surface
    • Contains much of the atmosphere's ozone

    Properties of Water

    • Water is essential for life on Earth, covering 65% of the planet's surface
    • The human body is composed of 65% water
    • Water is a colourless, tasteless, and odourless liquid
    • Water exists in three states: solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (steam)
    • Water expands on cooling, with a lower density in its solid state, causing ice to float on water
    • Water has high melting and boiling points
