Study Notes
The Troposphere
- The lowest part of the atmosphere, where we live, containing most of the weather (clouds, rain, snow)
- Temperature decreases with altitude, approximately 6.5°C per kilometre
- Contains about 75% of the atmosphere's air and almost all of the water vapour
- The boundary layer is the lowest part, where air motion is influenced by the Earth's surface
- Turbulence in the boundary layer redistributes heat, moisture, pollutants, and atmospheric constituents
The Tropopause
- The top of the troposphere, varying in height from 0-10 km at the poles to 17-18 km near the equator
The Stratosphere
- Extends from the tropopause to about 50 km above the Earth's surface
- Contains much of the atmosphere's ozone
Properties of Water
- Water is essential for life on Earth, covering 65% of the planet's surface
- The human body is composed of 65% water
- Water is a colourless, tasteless, and odourless liquid
- Water exists in three states: solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (steam)
- Water expands on cooling, with a lower density in its solid state, causing ice to float on water
- Water has high melting and boiling points
