Athletics: Exploring Major Events in Track and Field

Marathon

Marathon is the longest and most prestigious road race in existence. It originates from the legend of the soldier Pheidippides, who ran from the city of Marathon to Athens to bring news of a military victory against the invading Persians. Modern marathons are 26.2 miles (42.195 kilometers) long and require immense endurance, strength, and mental fortitude.

Shot Put

The shot put is one of the oldest field events in athletics. In this event, athletes throw a heavy metal ball (called a shot) as far as possible. The distance is measured from where the shot lands.

Sprinting

Sprinting involves running over short distances at maximum speed. Three sprinting events are held at the Olympics and outdoor World Championships: the 100m, 200m, and 400m. These races require an athlete to reach their top speed quickly and maintain it throughout the race.

Long Jump

Long jump requires athletes to cover the greatest horizontal distance from a standing start or a run-up, by jumping from both feet into a sandpit. A long jump competition consists of two separate jumps—the first for qualification and the second for the final round, with the best jump counting towards the overall score.

High Jump

High jump is another jumping event where athletes compete to clear a crossbar with their bodies without knocking it off its supports. Each bar represents a certain height, and athletes have three attempts per height, with the last successful attempt being recorded as the result. If no competitor clears the highest height, the athlete who jumped closest wins.
