Study Notes
Primary Ignition System Components
- Major components include the battery, ignition switch, primary coil winding, ignition module, reluctor and pickup coil, and distributor.
Secondary Ignition System Components
- Key components are the secondary coil winding, coil wire, distributor cap and rotor, spark plug wires, and spark plugs.
Battery
- Supplies necessary power to the ignition system for engine start-up.
Ignition Switch
- Operates the engine by switching power on or off to the ignition system.
Primary Coil Winding
- Consists of several hundred turns of heavy wire, functioning as the low-voltage winding within the ignition coil.
Ignition Module
- Acts as a transistorized switch that manages the on and off operation of the primary current.
Reluctor and Pickup Coil
- Generates a signal for the ignition module; the reluctor is mounted on the distributor shaft, producing a signal in the stationary pickup coil as it rotates.
Distributor
- Driven by the camshaft, it is responsible for timing the spark and directing it to the appropriate cylinder, operating at half the speed of the engine.
Secondary Coil Winding
- High-voltage winding consisting of several thousand turns of fine wire wrapped around the primary coil winding.
Coil Wire
- Transmits high voltage from the secondary coil winding to the distributor cap.
Distributor Cap and Rotor
- Directs high voltage from the coil wire to each cylinder in the correct firing order, allowing a single ignition coil to serve all cylinders.
Spark Plug Wires
- Carry high voltage from the distributor cap to each spark plug.
Spark Plugs
- Generate the spark that initiates combustion, threaded into the cylinder head and extending into the combustion chamber.
