Aspirin
- Generic name: Acetylsalicylic acid
- Indications: Chest pain, myocardial infarction (MI), unstable angina, primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, stroke prevention, pain relief, fever reduction
- Recommended adult dosage for chest pain, MI, or unstable angina: 160-325 mg chewed immediately
- Contraindications: Active gastrointestinal bleeding, history of aspirin-induced asthma, recent surgery, children and adolescents with viral illness (due to risk of Reye's syndrome)
- Mechanism of action: Inhibits prostaglandin synthesis, which reduces inflammation, pain, and fever; also inhibits platelet aggregation, reducing the risk of blood clots
- Serious adverse reactions: Gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), Reye's syndrome (in children and adolescents)
- Less serious adverse reactions: Heartburn, nausea, stomach upset, dizziness, tinnitus
- Classification: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
