Classifiers in ASL

• Classifiers categorize handshapes that represent objects or actions in American Sign Language.

Semantic Classifier (SCL)

• SCL represents an object in a location, illustrating movement when appropriate.
• Handshape indicates the object abstractly, often lacking iconic representation.

Descriptive Classifier (DCL)

• DCL is used for describing an object's appearance, including shape, size, texture, or pattern.

Instrument Classifier (ICL)

• ICL demonstrates how an object is handled or manipulated.

Body Part Size and Shape Specifier (BPSASS)

• BPSASS describes the shape, size, or texture of a specific body part.

Body Classifier (BCL)

• BCL uses the upper body to enact the verb in a sentence, particularly through arm movement.
• Unlike ICL, BCL does not show object handling; role shifting is often required.

Number/Letter Classifier

• Utilizes handshapes from the manual alphabet or numbers as part of descriptive gestures.

Body Part Classifier (BPCL)

• BPCL represents a specific body part that is performing an action.

Locative Classifier (LCL)

• LCL indicates an object's position and may show movement.
• Handshape can iconically depict part or whole of the object.

Element Classifier (ECL)

• ECL represents the movements of non-solid elements or entities.
