Study Notes
Pre-Procedure Preparation
- Wear all personal protective equipment (PPE) before entering the patient area
- Perform hand hygiene:
- Wash hands with soap and water for 40-60 seconds
- Rub hands palm to palm with fingers interlaced and rotational rubbing of left thumb clasped in right palm
- Rinse hands with water and dry thoroughly with a single-use towel
- Put on a gown, face protection (medical mask, face shield, or goggles), and gloves over gown cuffs
Collecting Blood Sample
- Prepare the room with infectious waste bags and a leak-proof and puncture-resistant sharps container
- Identify and prepare the patient, explaining the procedure and its purpose
- Select the blood collection site, preferably at the bend of the elbow, and palpate the area to locate a visible, straight, and clear vein
- Apply a tourniquet around the arm and ask the patient to form a fist to make the veins more prominent
- Disinfect the area where the needle will be inserted using 70% isopropyl alcohol, waiting 30 seconds for it to dry
- Insert the blood collector tube into the holder, avoiding pushing it past the recessed line on the needle holder
- Anchor the vein by holding the patient's arm and placing a thumb below the intended insertion site
- Perform the blood draw swiftly at a 30° angle, avoiding touching the disinfected site
Blood Collection Procedure
- When blood starts flowing, ask the patient to open their hand
- Once sufficient blood has been collected (minimum 5ml), release the tourniquet before withdrawing the needle
- Give the patient a clean gauze or dry cotton wool ball to press gently on the site
- Withdraw the needle gently and remove the blood collector tube from the holder
- Put the needle into a leak-proof and puncture-resistant sharps container
- If the sharps container has a needle remover, remove the needle following the instructions; otherwise, do not remove the needle from the holder
Post-Procedure
- Stop the bleeding and clean the skin
- Put an adhesive bandage on the site, if necessary
- Put items that dripped blood or had body fluids on them into the infectious waste bag for destruction
- Disinfect the blood holder tray and rack after use
- Prepare the blood sample for transport by wiping the tube with a disposable paper towel and placing it in a plastic leak-proof packaging container
