Questions and Answers

What is the primary goal of AI developers when creating artificial intelligence?

  • To mimic human intelligence in a logical and mathematical form (correct)
  • To create a computer that can truly think and understand
  • To replicate human intelligence exactly
  • To develop a machine that can learn from its mistakes
  • What is a limitation of computer systems in terms of achieving intelligence?

  • They can only learn from labeled data
  • They can only understand natural language
  • They are incapable of understanding anything due to their mechanical nature (correct)
  • They can only process large amounts of data
  • What is the purpose of steps 2-7 in the intelligence process?

  • To repeat the process until the goal is achieved or the possibilities are exhausted (correct)
  • To gather additional information to support the goal
  • To define the relationships and truth values between existing and new information
  • To set a goal based on needs or wants

    Study Notes

    Turing Test Evolution

    • The newer, Total Turing Test includes physical contact in the form of perceptual ability interrogation, which requires computer vision and robotics to succeed.
    • Modern techniques focus on achieving the goal, rather than mimicking humans completely.

    Thinking Humanly

    • Thinking humanly means a computer performs tasks that require intelligence, not just rote procedures, from a human.
    • This requires determining how humans think, which cognitive modeling approaches define using three techniques:
      • Introspection: monitoring one's own thought processes.
      • Psychological testing: observing a person's behavior and adding it to a database.
      • Brain imaging: monitoring brain activity directly.

    AI and Human Intelligence

    • AI doesn't really have anything to do with human intelligence, but rather simulates it.
    • AI relies on algorithms to achieve a result, which may or may not have anything to do with human goals or methods.
    • AI can be categorized in four ways, one of which is acting humanly, which reflects the Turing test.

    AI Categories

    • Acting humanly: when a computer acts like a human, succeeding in the Turing test.
    • This category includes technologies like natural language processing, knowledge representation, automated reasoning, and machine learning.

    Intelligence Process

    • Intelligence often follows a process that a computer system can mimic:
      • Set a goal based on needs or wants.
      • Assess the value of currently known information.
      • Gather additional information.
      • Manipulate data to achieve a consistent form.
      • Define relationships and truth values between information.
      • Determine whether the goal is achieved.
      • Modify the goal based on new data.
      • Repeat the process until the goal is achieved.

    Limitations of Computer Intelligence

    • A computer's capability to achieve intelligence is severely limited.
    • Computers rely on machine processes to manipulate data using pure math in a mechanical fashion.
    • Computers cannot understand, separate truth from mistruth, or fully implement mental activities described in the intelligence process.
