Study Notes
What is AI?
- Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to computer systems capable of performing complex tasks that historically only a human could do, such as reasoning, making decisions, or solving problems.
- AI describes a wide range of technologies that power many services and goods we use every day, from apps to chatbots.
AI Types
-
Based on Capabilities:
- Weak AI or Narrow AI: performs a dedicated task with intelligence, e.g., playing chess, self-driving cars, speech recognition, and image recognition.
- General AI: performs any intellectual task with efficiency like a human, but currently does not exist.
- Super AI: surpasses human intelligence, with cognitive properties, and can perform any task better than humans, but is still a hypothetical concept.
-
Based on Functionality:
- Reactive Machines: purely reactive, no memory storage, and react to current scenarios.
- Limited Memory: stores past experiences for a short period, uses stored data for a limited time, e.g., self-driving cars.
- Theory of Mind: understands human emotions, beliefs, and interacts socially like humans, but not yet developed.
- Self-Awareness: super intelligent, with consciousness, sentiments, and self-awareness, but still hypothetical.
How does AI work?
- Analyzes data, categorizes it, and works with it according to its categorization, similar to how humans recognize patterns.
What's great about AI?
- Work optimisation: automates repetitive tasks, improving efficiency and reducing human error.
- Accuracy: analyzes vast amounts of data with precision, leading to more accurate predictions and decisions.
- Accessibility: improves accessibility for people with disabilities using assistive technologies.
- Simplicity: AI usage is not too complicated, making it accessible to everyone.
What's not so great about AI?
- Overreliance: people may get lazy, relying on AI to do manual work.
- Blackmail: AI can be used for malicious purposes, like evil and menacing activities.
- Job Displacement: AI automation may lead to job losses in certain industries, causing economic disruption and unemployment.
- Ethical Dilemmas: AI raises complex ethical questions, such as autonomous weapons and AI in decision-making processes.
