Study Notes
What is Artificial Intelligence?
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a computer science technology that creates intelligent machines that can mimic human behavior.
- Intelligent machines can think like humans, behave like humans, and make decisions.
- AI is made up of two words, "Artificial" and "Intelligence", meaning "man-made thinking ability".
- AI machines can work on their own with programmed algorithms, without pre-programming for a specific task.
Why do we need Artificial Intelligence?
- The goal of AI is to create intelligent machines that can mimic human behavior.
- AI is needed to solve complex problems, automate routine work, save manpower, and perform various tasks.
Real-world Applications of AI
- Google Search Engine uses AI to provide relevant recommendations.
- Ride-sharing applications like Uber use AI and machine learning to determine ride type, time, and price.
- AI is used in email spam filtering, with Gmail successfully filtering 99.9% of spam mails.
- Social networking sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest use AI for face recognition, friend suggestions, and understanding contextual meaning of emojis.
- AI is used in product recommendations on Amazon and personalized recommendations on Netflix.
Difference between AI, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a technology to create intelligent machines that can mimic human behavior, coined in 1956 by John McCarthy.
- Machine Learning (ML) is a subset of AI that learns from past data and experiences, coined in 1959 by Arthur Samuel.
- Deep Learning (DL) is a subset of ML and AI that imitates the working of the human brain, coined in 2000 by Igor Aizenberg.
- AI deals with structured and semi-structured data, while ML deals with structured and semi-structured data, and DL deals with structured and unstructured data.
- AI requires a huge amount of data, ML can work with less data, and DL requires a huge amount of data.
Types of AI
- Weak AI or Narrow AI is capable of performing dedicated tasks with intelligence, e.g., Siri.
- General AI is the intelligent machine that can perform any intellectual task that a human can.
- Based on functionalities, AI can be divided into different types.
