Technique
- Technique is the manner in which artists use and manipulate materials to achieve the desired formal effect and communicate the desired concept or meaning.
- The distinctive character or nature of the medium determines the technique.
- Technique involves tools and technology, ranging from the most traditional to the most contemporary.
- The Filipino Struggles Through History (1963) mural by Carlos Francisco takes advantage of line and color to communicate dynamism and intense passion in the expressionist modern style.
- The Bonifacio Monument by Guillermo Tolentino makes use of carving to create a work with mass and volume which depicts the scene realistically capturing a moment of stillness in the Neoclassic style.
Art Experience and Consumption
- Time-based artifacts or performances are received or perceived live or directly in real time, for example: live plays, performances, installations.
- Time-based artifacts can be recorded and we watch them in real time but not at the site of production, for example: a documented play, film, exhibit, or an ad generally watched through an electronic medium.
Contemporary Art and Medium Expansion
- Site-specific works refer to works in which location or space is crucial to the artist’s intended meaning and experience of the work by the audience.
- Mark Salvatus’ Secret Garden 2, 2010 is an example of a site-specific work, created purposefully for a small room at the Vargas Museum.
- The Secret Garden 2 is interactive; one has to peek, but not fully enter the space, to get but a glimpse of what appears to be a “secret garden.”
- The work is meaningless without the collaboration of an actively participating audience.
- The artist Salvatus worked with inmates of a jail in his home province of Quezon, fashioning the so-called garden from plastic spoons, forks, and other implements—a clandestine process that took place in defiance of prison rules.
- The secret process remains a secret, even for the audience who cannot fully see the garden – a frustrating experience for some, but one that could also be enlightening, especially if one realizes how the prisoners and the artist created something new, creative, and to a certain extent, empowering.
