Line

  • Can suggest shape, pattern, form, structure, growth, depth, distance, rhythm, movement, and a range of emotions
  • Can create texture and can be thick and thin
  • Types of lines:
    • Curved lines: suggest comfort and ease, grace, movement, flexibility, and joyousness
    • Horizontal lines: suggest distance and calm, express ideas of calmness and quiescence
    • Vertical lines: suggest height and strength, poised for action, express dignity
    • Jagged lines: suggest turmoil and anxiety
    • Diagonal lines: suggest action and movement, give animation to composition

Types of Lines

  • Repetition: occurs when two or more lines are drawn within a corner following the lines of the corner
  • Contrast: formed from lines that are in opposition to each other
  • Transition line: connects two workflow elements, defines the next step in a workflow

Expressive Qualities of Lines

  • Freehand lines: express personal energy and mood of the artist
  • Mechanical lines: express rigid control
  • Continuous lines: lead the eye in certain directions
  • Broken lines: express the ephemeral or the insubstantial
  • Thick lines: express strength
  • Thin lines: express delicacy

Form

  • 2 Types of forms:
    • Organic forms: irregular in outline, often asymmetrical, naturally occurring
    • Geometric forms: correspond to named regular shapes, such as squares, rectangles, circles, etc.

Perspective

  • Deals with the effect of distance upon the appearance of objects, judges spatial relationships
  • 2 Kinds of Perspective:
    • Linear perspective: representation of distance by means of converging lines, deals with direction of lines and size of objects
    • Aerial perspective: representation of relative distances by gradations of tone or color, objects become fainter in the distance

Space

  • Refers to distances or areas around, between or within components of a piece
  • Can be positive (white or light), negative (black or dark), open, closed, shallow, deep, or two-dimensional or three-dimensional

Elements of Art

  • 7 Elements of Art:
    • Shape: encloses a two-dimensional area, geometric or organic
    • Form: encloses a three-dimensional area, three-dimensional analog of shape
    • Line: foundation of all drawing, can be used in many different ways
    • Color: has 3 distinct qualities: Hue, Value, and Intensity, shadows/shades from lightness to darkness
    • Value: refers to the lightness or darkness of a color
    • Space: refers to distances or areas around, between or within components of a piece
    • Texture: surface quality of an object that we sense through touch
