Study Notes
Business Process Modelling
- A business process is a sequence of steps that transforms inputs into outputs, governed by defined rules to fulfill a business task.
- It is a set of logically connected activities aimed at creating value for the enterprise.
Business Process Management (BPM)
- BPM focuses on improving a business process from end to end by analysing, modelling, executing, monitoring, and continually optimizing it.
Rules of ARIS EPC Diagram
- A process must start with at least one event.
- A process must end with at least one final event.
- Each path must have a strictly sequential series of events and activities, with no two connecting activities or events.
- Path branching or merging must be indicated by rule symbols (AND, OR, XOR).
AND Operator
- Used for parallel paths: two events lead to an activity being done in parallel.
OR Operator
- Used for alternative paths: either event can trigger an activity.
- Event causes either activity 1 or 2 to be done.
XOR Operator
- Used when the process can go to/from one of the branching paths: either event 1 or 2 causes an activity to be done.
Business Process Features
- Uses input information and/or goods from other processes, suppliers, or customers.
- Includes a set of steps that can be sub-processes.
- Produces a product/service-information for a customer (internal or external).
- Creates a defined and measurable value for which the customer is willing to pay.
- Requires resources (human, material, information, or IT systems).
- Is governed and controlled by decisions.
Business Process Orientation
- Awareness of customers and business results delivered to customers.
- Awareness of overall business goals and mission.
- Reduction of departmental egoisms.
- Enhanced creativity, liability, and productivity of employees.
- Entrepreneurial behavior of employees.
Process Anatomy
- Primary Process: "doing the business" (serves external customers).
- Secondary Process (Service Process): "support primary process" (serves internal customers).
Business Process Modelling Language
- UML's activity diagram
- BPMN
- EPC (Event-driven Process Chain)
Why EPC?
- Helps understand business processes with logical operators.
- Often used to configure ERP systems for process improvement.
Event vs Activity
- Event: an occurrence, something that happens.
- Activity: something done as an action or movement, performed by a single person at a definite place in a limited time.
