System Classification
- Multi-channel, single-phase system: two servers, one process, each server has its own line feeding into both processes (example: bank tellers)
- Multi-channel, multi-phase system: two servers, each with multiple processes, each process having two servers (example: grocery checkout)
OneCard Office Example
- Students line up to get their OneCard (student identification) outside the OneCard office
- Time between student arrivals is exponentially distributed with a mean of 13 minutes
- OneCards can be created in 8 minutes (average), but sometimes in as little as 6 minutes or as long as 12 minutes
- Only one person will be working the service desk due to illness
Analysis
- Identify the type of system (number of processes, line behavior, number of servers), distributions (arrivals and service times), and units
- Possible representations of the system: collecting/filling out paperwork, taking a picture, and printing the card as separate processes, or one process that contains many tasks
