Urban morphology is the study of the physical structure and organization of cities, particularly the relationship between buildings and public spaces. It is important in city planning because it helps to understand how cities function and how they can be designed to better serve their inhabitants.

The two methods to identify urban tissue/fabric are fabric typology based on buildings and fabric typology based on streets. Fabric typology based on buildings categorizes tissue as pointed, linear, tissue, or compact. Fabric typology based on streets categorizes tissue as grid tissue, curvilinear tissue, radial tissue, axial tissue, organic tissue, or angular tissue.

Solids and voids are the building blocks of the urban fabric. Solids refer to buildings and other structures, while voids refer to open spaces, such as parks and plazas. The relationship between solids and voids determines the character of a city and how it is experienced by its inhabitants.
