What are the different types of operating systems? Give an example of each.

The different types of operating systems are Mainframe, Desktop, Multiprocessor, Distributed, Clustered, Multiprogramming, Real time, Embedded and Time sharing. An example of Mainframe OS is z/OS, an example of Desktop OS is Windows, an example of Real-time OS is VxWorks.

What is the difference between Multiprogramming and Timesharing?

Multiprogramming is a technique in which multiple programs are executed by a single processor by switching between them. Timesharing is a technique in which multiple users can access a single processor and each user gets a small amount of CPU time. The main difference between the two is that in Multiprogramming, the CPU time is shared among multiple programs, whereas in Timesharing, the CPU time is shared among multiple users.

What are the components of an Operating System? Explain the function of the Process Management Component.

The components of an Operating System are Process Management Component, Memory Management component, I/O Management component, File Management component, Protection System, Networking management component, and Command interpreter. The Process Management Component is responsible for creating and managing processes. It allocates resources to processes, schedules them for execution, and provides synchronization and communication mechanisms between them. It also manages process states and process termination.
