    Study Notes

This article provides an overview of gnathostomiasis, a parasitic infection caused by nematodes of the genus Gnathostoma. The article discusses the epidemiology, natural history, pathogenesis, pathology, and clinical features of the disease. Gnathostomiasis is found more frequently in adults than children, and in more females than males. The most common manifestation is intermittent, migratory swelling and erythematous edema in the skin and subcutaneous tissues. The migrating worm produces several toxins and can migrate to the ocular system and central nervous system, causing localized inflammation and destruction. Peripheral blood leukocytosis with hyper-eosinophilia occurs in acute cases. In cerebral gnathostomiasis, the cerebrospinal fluid is usually bloody or xanthochromic and has a pleocytosis.
