The Rules of Volleyball: A Comprehensive Guide
- The objective of volleyball is for a team to win three sets faster than the opposing team.
- A team consists of 12 players, with six players taking the court at any one time, including a libero and two setters in the back row and a left side, right side, and middle hitters in the front row.
- To win a set, a team must score 25 points and be at least two points ahead.
- The court is 18 meters long and 9 meters wide, with an attack line three meters away from the net.
- The net is 8 feet for men and 7 foot 4 inches for women.
- A team is only allowed up to three touches of the ball, including a pass or bump, a set, and an attack or spike.
- A team can rotate clockwise to stand at a new position after winning a point.
- The team that wins three sets first wins the game. If both teams have won two sets each, the fifth and final set only goes to 15 points.
- A defender can jump in the air to block an attack, but it does not count towards one of the team's three touches.
- A dig is a play to stop the ball hitting the ground after an attack, but it does count as one of the team's three touches.
- A libero is a defensive specialist who can come on at any time in place of any back-row player, but they cannot serve the ball, make an attacking shot above the net, or cross the attack line.
- During stoppage in play, a team can substitute up to six players per set, with a libero being allowed to be substituted an unlimited amount of times, and only one player can be substituted at any time.
