Study Notes
Form
- Architectural form is where mass and space meet
- Architectural forms include elements such as textures, materials, the modulation of light and shade, and color
- The quality of the architecture is built on the designer's ability to utilize and relate these elements in both the interior spaces and the spaces surrounding buildings.
Properties of Form
- Form in architecture includes both internal structure and external outline, unifying the whole.
- While form often includes a sense of three-dimensional mass or volume, shape refers to the essential aspect of form that governs its outline.
- Color is the attribute that most clearly distinguishes a form from its surroundings. It also impacts the visual weight of a form.
- Texture is the visual and tactile quality given to a surface by the size, shape, arrangement, and proportions of the parts. Texture also dictates the degree to which the surfaces of a form reflect or absorb incident light.
- Position refers to a form's location relative to its environment or the visual field within which it is observed.
- Orientation is the direction of a form in relation to the ground plane, compass points, other forms, or the individual viewing it.
- Visual Inertia refers to the concentration and stability of a form. It is influenced by its geometry, orientation to the ground, gravity, and our line of sight.
- All these properties of form are affected by the conditions under which we view them.
