Study Notes

Hardware Components

  • Hardware refers to the physical components of a computer that perform input, processing, output, and storage activities.

CPU (Microprocessor)

  • The central processing unit (CPU) performs actual computation inside any computer.
  • The CPU is a microprocessor made up of millions of microscopic transistors embedded on a chip.

Parts of a Computer

  • Central Processing Unit (CPU): Manipulates data and controls tasks performed by other components.
  • Primary Storage: Temporarily stores data and program instructions during processing.
  • Secondary Storage: Stores data and programs for future use.
  • Input Technologies: Accept data and instructions, converting them to a form the computer can understand.
  • Output Technologies: Present data and information in a form people can understand.
  • Communication Technologies: Provide for the flow of data from external computer networks to the CPU and from the CPU to computer networks.

Input Technologies

  • Input technologies allow users to enter data into a computer.
  • Data can be of different types, including numeric, text, multimedia (images, video, and sound).
  • Each data type has its suitable input technologies.
  • Two main types of input devices: • Human data-entry devices (require human effort to input data): Examples include keyboard, mouse, touch screen, and voice recognition. • Source-data automation devices (input data with minimal human intervention): Examples include bar code readers.

Output Technologies

  • Output generated by a computer can be transmitted to the user via several output devices.
  • Output devices include monitors, printers, and plotters.

Central Processing Unit (CPU)

  • The CPU has different parts, which perform different functions: • Control unit: sequentially accesses program instructions, decodes them, and controls the flow of data. • Arithmetic-Logic Unit (ALU). • Registers.

This quiz covers the concepts of hardware and mobile devices in information technology, as studied in the Department of Socio-computing at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science. It is based on chapters from 'Introduction to Information Systems' and 'Principles of Information Systems' textbooks.
