    Applications of Diodes

    The PN Junction

    • A PN junction is formed by combining two types of semiconductors, negative and positive, resulting in a slope in electron concentration (dn/dx) in the negative region and a slope in gap concentration (dp/dx) in the positive region.
    • This leads to the transfer of electrons to the positive region and gaps to the negative region.

    The Potential Barrier

    • The presence of two different charges separated by a distance creates an electric field, which in turn creates an electric potential.
    • This potential barrier can be used to convert alternating voltage into continuous voltage.

    Diode Rectification

    • Rectification is the process of converting alternating current or voltage into direct current or voltage in one direction.
    • Rectification efficiency measures the ability of the diode to maintain a constant voltage despite changes in load resistance.
    • Ripple factor (γ) measures the amplitude of the AC component of the output voltage.

    Forward Bias Connection

    • Forward biasing a diode involves connecting the positive terminal of the battery to the P crystal and the negative terminal to the N crystal.
    • This reduces the barrier voltage, allowing electrons to flow through the depletion region and pass current in the circuit.
    • If the barrier voltage is increased, electrons are attracted to the positive end of the battery and gaps to the negative end, stopping the flow of current in the circuit.
