Apparatus Technician Call-Out Procedures (After Hours)

Purpose: Establishes uniform guidelines for Apparatus Technician call-outs outside of normal work hours.

Authority: Fire Rescue Administrator.

Scope: Applies to all Palm Beach County Fire Rescue personnel and reservists.

Emergency Vehicle Out of Service:
- Procedure: If a major vehicle component (engine, transmission, etc.) fails, the Lieutenant or Operational Captain:
- Immediately contacts the Communications Center to notify an on-call Apparatus Technician.
- Enters a work request in AssetWorks for repairs.
- Technician assesses repairability; if repairable, notifies Communications Center when the unit is ready.
- If not repairable quickly, or if parts are unavailable, assists the Lieutenant/Captain in finding a reserve unit (Central Shop, South Shop, or another station).
- Towing: If towing is involved, follow PPM FR-S-102.
- Procedure: If a major vehicle component (engine, transmission, etc.) fails, the Lieutenant or Operational Captain:

- Procedure: If a portable piece of equipment (e.g., pump, lights) fails, the Lieutenant or Operational Captain:
- Checks for spare, similar equipment in the Battalion.
- Enters a work request in AssetWorks for repairs.
- Uses a service repair tag.
- If no similar equipment is available, the Battalion Chief assesses the criticalness of the equipment failure before calling the on-call technician.
- Procedure: If a portable piece of equipment (e.g., pump, lights) fails, the Lieutenant or Operational Captain:

Emergency Vehicle in Service with Repair Needs:
- Minor Repairs: (ancillary systems, light bulbs, etc.) - A work request is placed in AssetWorks for later scheduling.
- Significant Repairs: (entire systems, emergency warning systems) - Battalion Chief determines extent of impact on operations or safety. If significant limitations, an on-call Apparatus Technician is immediately notified. Otherwise, a work request is created for later.
