APA Documentation
- APA stands for American Psychological Association.
- The APA Style Guide is used to document information taken from sources used in reports.
- APA style is used to avoid plagiarism.
Avoiding Plagiarism
- Accidental plagiarism happens when you forget to cite a source.
- Intentional plagiarism is copying without permission.
- To cite a source means to provide information about the origin of the material you used or discussed in your report, using in-text citations and a reference list.
- To attribute a source means to give credit to the original authors.
Citing a Source
- A reference list is a list of all sources cited in your report and is placed on a separate page at the end of the document.
- The reference list is used to locate and retrieve any sources mentioned.
- The reference list is ordered alphabetically and formatted using hanging indents.
- All lines in the reference list except the first line are indented.
- Each reference is double-spaced.
- The reference list is identified by the heading, "References."
APA In-Text Citations
- Use parentheses to cite sources directly in the text.
- Include the author's last name and the year of publication.
- Use the author's last name and year of publication in the text if using the narrative style of in-text citations.
- For sources with three or more authors, cite only the surname of the first author followed by "et al."
