Reference List Formatting (APA 7th Edition)
- Reference list placed at the end of the paper.
- New page titled "References" (bold, centered).
- Double-spaced, same as rest of paper.
- Hanging indentation (all lines after the first are indented 0.5 inches).
Basic Rules for Most Sources
- Author names inverted (last name first).
- Initials for first & middle names.
- List up to 20 authors, separating with commas; use & before last author.
- For 21+ authors, use ellipsis after 19th author, and then add the final author's name.
- Alphabetized by first author's last name.
- Multiple articles by same author/same order: list chronologically.
- Titles: Capitalize only first word of title and subtitle, first word after a colon/dash, & proper nouns.
- Longer works italicized (e.g., books, journals).
- Shorter works (e.g., chapters, essays) are not italicized, underlined, or in quotes.
Basic Rules for Journal Articles
- Journal titles are presented fully and italicized.
- Journal titles maintain all non-standard punctuation and capitalization. (e.g. PhiloSOPHIA, Past & Present).
- Capitalize all major words in journal titles.
- Journal article titles: capitalize first word of title/subtitle, first word after a colon/dash and proper nouns.
- Do not italicize or underline journal article titles.
- Do not put journal article titles in quotes.
