Study Notes

Antibioticos

  • Polymyxins are a class of antibiotic peptides that are derived from the bacterium Bacillus polymyxa. They are used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including those caused by multidrug-resistant pathogens. The two primary polymyxins used clinically are Polymyxin B Sulfate and Colistimethate (also known as Polymyxin E, and marketed as Coly-Mycin M®).
  • Rifamycins are a family of antibiotics that are primarily used to treat tuberculosis (TB) and other mycobacterial infections. They work by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial RNA, thereby preventing the growth and replication of bacteria. The three main rifamycins used clinically are Rifampin (Rifadin®), Rifaximin (Xifaxan®), and Rifamycin (Aemcolo®).
  • Fidaxomicin (marketed as Dificid®) is a macrolide antibiotic that is used to treat Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD). It works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial RNA and protein, thereby preventing the growth and replication of C. difficile.

Agentes de Tracto Urinario

  • Fosfomycin (Monurol®) is an antibiotic that is used to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs). It works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, thereby preventing the growth and replication of bacteria.
  • Methenamine hippurate (Hipprex®) is a urinary tract antiseptic that is used to treat and prevent UTIs. It works by reducing the pH of the urine, making it less hospitable to bacterial growth.
  • Nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin®, Furadantin®) is an antibiotic that is used to treat UTIs. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial DNA, thereby preventing the growth and replication of bacteria.

Antibacteriales Topicas

  • Bacitracin is a topical antibiotic that is used to treat skin infections and wounds. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, thereby preventing the growth and replication of bacteria.
  • Polymyxin B is a topical antibiotic that is used to treat skin infections and wounds. It works by disrupting the integrity of bacterial cell membranes, thereby preventing the growth and replication of bacteria.
  • Mafenide acetate (Sulfamylon®) is a topical antibiotic that is used to treat burns and other skin wounds. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial DNA, thereby preventing the growth and replication of bacteria.
  • Mupirocin (Bactroban®) is a topical antibiotic that is used to treat skin infections, including impetigo and folliculitis. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial proteins, thereby preventing the growth and replication of bacteria.
  • Retapamulin (Altabax®) is a topical antibiotic that is used to treat impetigo and other skin infections. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial protein, thereby preventing the growth and replication of bacteria.
  • Silver Sulfadiazine (Silvadene®) is a topical antibiotic that is used to treat burns and other skin wounds. It works by releasing silver ions, which are toxic to bacteria, thereby preventing the growth and replication of bacteria.
  • Sulfacetamide is a topical antibiotic that is used to treat conjunctivitis and other eye infections. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial DNA, thereby preventing the growth and replication of bacteria.
  • Ozenoxacin (Xepi®) is a topical antibiotic that is used to treat impetigo and other skin infections. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial DNA, thereby preventing the growth and replication of bacteria.
