Study Notes

Ankle Injury and Anatomy

  • Ankle injury is a malfunction or damage to a part of the body that prevents an athlete from performing, including muscles, bones, and tendons.

Ankle Sprain

  • Ankle sprain occurs when ligaments are forced out of their normal range of motion, causing damage to the ankle joint.
  • Causes of ankle sprain include:
    • Falling and landing awkwardly
    • Jumping and landing in a strange position
    • Walking or working on an uneven surface
    • Having someone else stomp on your foot during sports activity

Symptoms of Ankle Sprain

  • Ankle swelling and pain when touched or pressed
  • Pain when loading body weight on injured foot
  • Haematoma or ankle hypertrophy (skin appears blue)
  • Difficulty moving the ankle around

Ankle Anatomy

  • The ankle consists of:
    • 26 Bones
    • 33 Joints
    • Tendons:
      • Ansi Ligament
      • Frontal Ligament
      • Herbal fragmentation ligament
      • Zanpubi Ligament
  • Ankle Bone: Located in the underpass
  • Tibia: The forgotten part of the ankle
  • Splinter: Located in the brutal part of the ankle

Ankle Joint Movement

  • Ankle core joint is responsible for foot movement up and down
  • Partial joint: Located under the base joint, consisting of two bones:
    • Ankle bone (above)
    • Butt bone (below)
  • Partial joint is responsible for lateral motion of the foot

Motor Range Test for Ankle Joint

  • Uses a Goinometer device to measure angles of the joint
  • Measures the amount of improvement in joint movement
  • Test is performed in four directions:
    • Rounding
    • Distancing
    • Inward deviation
    • Outward deviation

Muscle Strength Test for Ankle Joint

  • Uses a device called Multagm to measure muscle strength
  • Objective: Measure muscle strength working on ankle joint
  • Test is performed by overcoming resistance in kilograms
  • Important to not bend the knee joint and keep the back and hands in a free position

Test your knowledge about sports injuries, specifically ankle sprains, and how they can occur. Learn about the causes and effects of ankle sprains on athletes.
