    Study Notes

    Animals in Space Exploration

    • Fruit Flies: First animals in space, launched on February 20, 1947, on a V-2 rocket. Used to study cosmic radiation's effect on living organisms. Survived the flight.
    • Monkeys and Apes: Used to understand how animal bodies react to space travel. Albert II, a monkey, flew in 1949, and Ham, a chimpanzee in 1961. These missions tested their ability to follow instructions and their overall survival in space.
    • Mice: Used in experiments to understand the impact of space on small animals. An early mission didn't survive due to rocket problems. More recent missions on the International Space Station successfully showed mice could live and grow in space.
    • Dogs: Laika, a dog, became the first animal to orbit Earth (November 3, 1957). This was to test if animals could survive lengthy space travel. Laika died a few hours after launch. Scientists learned a lot from this mission. Other dogs also flew on missions.
    • Tortoises: Sent into space in 1968 on the Zond 5 mission. Part of an experiment to understand the impact of space travel on organisms, specifically weight loss in space. The tortoises survived and returned to Earth.
    • Frogs: Used in 1959 and 1970 to understand how space impacts balance systems and inner ears. Researchers used bullfrogs. Found frogs thrive in weightlessness.
    • Spiders: Tested to see how animals deal with gravity in space. Used to test if they could spin webs in zero gravity. Experiment showed thinner webs compared to Earth.
    • Fish: A mummichog fish was in space in 1973 to show how animals swim in zero gravity. Medaka fish went to the International Space Station in 2012 to investigate bone growth in space.
    • Tardigrades: These are tiny animals (water bears) tested in 2007 on their tolerance to extreme space conditions. Withstood radiation and vacuum.
    • Nematodes (Worms): Space shuttle missions in 2003 used these to study muscle and DNA impact from space travel. Some survived.
