Animal Tissues
- Tissues are groups of specialized cells that perform unique functions
- All animals have four main tissues: epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous
- Epithelial tissues line internal and external body surfaces, such as the skin and digestive tract, and are involved in protection, lubrication, secretion, absorption, and waste excretion
- Connective tissues connect structures, provide support, and protect against infections
Epithelial Tissue
- Epithelial tissues form a barrier against physical, chemical, and microbial threats
- Epithelial cells lining inner body surfaces are called mucous membranes because they secrete mucus, a lubricating substance that protects and traps harmful substances
- Epithelial cells are tightly joined to each other and to the basement membrane, a layer of connective tissue
- Epithelial tissues lack their own blood supply and get nutrients from underlying vascularized connective tissue
- Epithelial cells constantly regenerate to replace damaged or worn-out cells
Types of Epithelial Tissues
- Classified based on cell shape and number of layers
- Single-layered epithelium is called simple epithelium:
- Squamous epithelium contains thin and flat cells
- Cuboidal epithelium consists of cube-shaped cells
- Columnar epithelium consists of tall, elongated cells
- Two or more layers of epithelial cells form stratified epithelium
- Pseudostratified epithelium appears multi-layered due to differences in cell height, but it actually consists of a single layer of cells
- Transitional epithelium is a type of stratified tissue that can appear cuboidal or squamous depending on its stretch
Connective Tissue
- A diverse group of tissues that bind and connect structures, provide support and protection, and perform other specialized functions
- Connective tissue cells are loosely associated with each other and are surrounded by an extensive extracellular matrix
- Most connective tissues can proliferate and have a blood supply
- Connective tissues are categorized as loose, dense, or specialized
Types of Connective Tissue
- Loose connective tissues include areolar, adipose, and reticular connective tissues which support various organs
- Dense connective tissues are more fibrous and include regular, irregular, and elastic types, found in structures like tendons, ligaments, and arteries
- Specialized connective tissue includes cartilage, bone, blood, and lymph, each with specific functions
