Describe sexual reproduction in plants.

The flower is the sexual organ of the plant. Pollen (usually carried by an insect, i.e., a bee) from the anther on the filament (all known as the stamen) is carried to another flower and pollinates the stigma. Then it makes a pollen tube that travels down the style to the ovary. They enter through the micropyle. There one sperm nucleus fertilizes the ova, becoming the embryo. The other fertilizes the two polar bodies, which become the endosperm/cotyledon (food for the growing embryo).
Signup and view all the answers

Some flowers are not brightly colored at all, but have a very pungent odor that smells like rotting meat. How do you think these flowers are pollinated?

The flowers use their stench of rotting meat to attract flies, which pollinate the flowers.
Signup and view all the answers

In many flowers, the pistils and stamens reach maturity at different times. Considering what you know about pollination, why would this be an advantage to the plant?

The advantage, or the scheme, is to be pollinated with pollen from another plant.
Signup and view all the answers

Study Notes

Angiosperms

 • Angiosperms are flowering plants that produce flowers and seeds.

Flower Attachment

 • Flowers attach to the plant at a part known as the receptacle.

Flower Colors

 • Brightly colored flowers attract pollinators, essential for reproduction.

Mammal Pollinators

 • Certain mammals, such as possums and bats, play a role in pollination.

Pollination with Reduced Petals

 • Plants with reduced or absent petals are typically pollinated by wind.

Female Reproductive Structure

 • The female reproductive structure in flowers is called the gynoecium, which comprises the style and ovary.

Parts of the Pistil

 • The three main parts of the pistil are the stigma, style, and ovary.

Ovule Storage

 • Ovules are stored inside the ovaries of the flower.

Parts of the Stamen

 • The stamen consists of two parts: the anther and filament.

Sexual Reproduction Process

 • In sexual reproduction, pollen from the anther travels to the stigma, forming a pollen tube that reaches the ovary, where fertilization occurs.

Ovary Development

 • The ovary of a flower develops into the fruit after fertilization.

Definition of Fruit

 • Fruit is defined as a ripened ovary containing seeds.

Flowers with Pungent Odors

 • Some flowers emit a foul odor resembling rotting meat to attract flies for pollination.

Maturity Timing of Pistils and Stamens

 • Staggered maturity of pistils and stamens helps ensure cross-pollination, enhancing genetic diversity in plants.
