Operating Room Attire
- Consists of body coverings like a pantsuit, headcover, mask, shoe covers, goggles, and an apron.
- Protects patients and personnel from contamination/infection.

Operating Room Attire Criteria
- Should be an effective barrier for microorganisms
- Should be closely woven with minimal microbial shedding.
- Should resist blood, bodily fluids, and abrasions
- Should be comfortable, cool, and hypoallergenic.
- Should not generate lint.
- Should be able to transmit heat and water.
- Should be easy to don and remove.
- Should be colored to reduce glare under light.
Dress Code
- Personal hygiene protocols should be followed.
- Street clothes are to not be worn in restricted/semi-restricted areas.
- OR attire is not worn outside the OR suite, to protect the OR from contamination from the outside environment and vice versa.
- A clean scrub suit should be put on after returning to the OR suite.

Protective Gloves
- Latex is a polymeric membrane of natural rubber.
- Contains protein antigens which are cured with agents that can cause allergic reactions.
- Surgical gloves come in multiple thicknesses.
Sterile Gown
- Worn over the scrub suit by all personnel in the sterile field.
- Differentiates between sterile and non-sterile personnel.
- Back of the gown is not sterile, nor are areas below the table level.
- Cuffs are stockinette knit to fit the wrists tightly.
- Should be resistant to fluids and blood.
- Should be comfortable.
Masks
- Worn to contain droplets containing microorganisms.
- Used in restricted areas where sterile supplies are exposed.
- Disposable masks are more appropriate.
Headcover
- Completely covers all hair
- Protects the gown from hair contamination
- Made of dense woven materials.
Shoe Covers
- Clean, washable, and soft-soled
- Protect the person from contamination
